I'm so very sorry to hear about Monica Sone.
I've just been looking again at THE PLAGUE AND I and loving all over again her pared down elegance and gentle personality.
Monica Sone (Kimi) was a person anyone could love and she has had a firm place in my heart since the day I met her through Betty's book.
I not only loved her but admired her so much. Kimi was one of the most memorable characters I have ever met through literature and, of course, she will live on, just as Betty does.
One of the highlights of last year for me was receiving her e-mail and I am so happy to hear that she liked my Christmas story.
Sad news that can only allow us to be glad that any of us got to meet Monica Sone, through the books THE PLAGUE AND I and NISEI DAUGHTER or in real life for it was such a privilege to know her.

We, in the Betty MacDonald Fan Club, have you all very much in mind and in heart.
I think about you constantly and put you in all our prayers.
I watch the daily News in the hope that the situation in Japan will change and that you will all be well cared for.
I think of you in all that snow and cold and our hope is that food and warmth will reach you and sustain you.
Our thoughts and prayers are especially with the children and with every person and family in this sad time of your distress.

Our prayers and well wishes to our Japanese friends.
Our family has always had close ties to Japan. Grandfather who officiated at Betsy's first marriage was a Japanese speaker and as founder of the Far East Department at the U of W a path builder for Japan in Seattle.
Mother's caregiver Karen, to her relief, did after a long wait hear from her son who teaches in Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture.
The pictures are horific and our hearts go out to those who have lost so much.

I, like all who are horrified and heartbroken by all the tragedies that have swept through Japan, pray that there will be hope and help for the Japanese people.
They have an enormous task ahead and I only hope they have the strength to implement it.

Split the atom's heart, and lo! Within it you will find a sun.
I am saddened and worried about the nuclear disaster that followed the series of strong earthquakes and tsunami in Japan.
I am saddened for the people who are suffering and worried about the potentially deadly future that lies before them due to the possible escalation of the release of radioisotopes from the damaged nuclear power plants.

This part of Japan felt the earthquake but did not suffer and damage.
Tokyo is having a hard time because some of their electricity came from the nuclear reactors that are now in a dangerous situation. Not only is the destruction terrible, but they don't know where people are.
Right now all the attention is on finding survivors and getting food and shelter to the homeless. Roads, railways, electricity, communications, etc. are all down or very limited and it is freezing at night there.
For the farmers, the future also looks bleak because the ocean waters came inland ten kilometers and flooded the rice fields with salt water.

I watch the daily News in the hope that the situation in Japan will change and that you will all be well cared for.

Dear friends,
Our prayers and well wishes to our Japanese friends.
Our family has always had close ties to Japan. Grandfather who officiated at Betsy's first marriage was a Japanese speaker and as founder of the Far East Department at the U of W a path builder for Japan in Seattle.
Mother's caregiver Karen, to her relief, did after a long wait hear from her son who teaches in Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture.
The pictures are horific and our hearts go out to those who have lost so much.

I don't know what to say.
I, like all who are horrified and heartbroken by all the tragedies that have swept through Japan, pray that there will be hope and help for the Japanese people.
They have an enormous task ahead and I only hope they have the strength to implement it.

Split the atom's heart, and lo! Within it you will find a sun.
I am saddened and worried about the nuclear disaster that followed the series of strong earthquakes and tsunami in Japan.
I am saddened for the people who are suffering and worried about the potentially deadly future that lies before them due to the possible escalation of the release of radioisotopes from the damaged nuclear power plants.

This part of Japan felt the earthquake but did not suffer and damage.
Tokyo is having a hard time because some of their electricity came from the nuclear reactors that are now in a dangerous situation. Not only is the destruction terrible, but they don't know where people are.
Right now all the attention is on finding survivors and getting food and shelter to the homeless. Roads, railways, electricity, communications, etc. are all down or very limited and it is freezing at night there.
For the farmers, the future also looks bleak because the ocean waters came inland ten kilometers and flooded the rice fields with salt water.

Don, your second husband is so very much nicer!
I love islands in North America: Though I know only the island „Mount Desert“ in Maine and not the island at the Pacific Coast –Betty's Vashon Island is near Seattle – however things seem to me to be very similar: Magic landscape, cosmic influences and thousands of small odd bits of land swimming in the wide ocean. Can they really swim? It looks as if they were wearing a life jacket around the lushgreen of the woods...
I like Betty's and Don's house! Though I am missing „STOVE“ still there is a mad washing machine that makes life here interesting. What ghosts are likely to live within it? (Don is a Scotsman, I think he has taken it out of a haunted castle). Betty's daughters also live here: They are capricious girls with silly notions! „STOVE“ could be the father! Pity, they have been nicer in the other books when they were still little and sweet!
However, there are nice cats and dogs: Betty is a great animal friend. She has even stored a huge amount of dog and cat boxes in the house. Indeed, the American kitchen is unbelievable!
When Betty can't buy food for humans – this happens with a stormy sea when the ferry boats can't deliver the island – she willingly resorts to those in the „worst case“.O, that culinary ability to adapt myself I will never develop! Do I perhaps eat the mice which my tomcat Tigerli brings me?
Betty's cook book is inexhaustible. From wild animals to marine creatures on the coast. In the Pacific fantastic fish and crustaceans live: Spoiled for choice! O seafood! „The king“ is the lobster, I learned in Maine!
However in Seattle it seems to be „Geoduck“! It's a sensation: It's got along neck! A sea giraffe? What's that? Betty help me! The damned name “Geoduck“ I don't find in my dictionary. The British encyclopedia Britannica doesn't know it either...Moment! I am looking it up in „The American Heritage Dictionary“. Thank God, I have found it: It's „a very large edible clam“. Clam of the size of 20cm.
What's the „cazze di Napoli“ in comparison to that? Mussels, shame upon you before the American! I look out of the window: Betty is crawling in the water with the whole family! Her daughter discovered Geoduck in the water. She grasps the neck of the animal! Clam is in a jam! It's caught! All are shouting for joy! What a delicacy! Betty is running into the kitchen: Clam is being prepared: I turn my eyes elsewhere, I don't want to see anything of it. I hear how the meat is smashed. Eggs are beat together with it. My stomach also feels sick.
Betty is calling to eat. I dont eat that strange animal. It tastes heavenly, says Betty! I believe
I will leave the island.

Wolfgang Hampel's birthday and success

Happy birthday, dear Gwen Grant and Betty MacDonald Fan Club founder Wolfgang Hampel.
Wolfgang Hampel's success story began in 1983 when he founded Betty MacDonald Fan Club with 4 fans. In 2011 we have members in 30 countries.
Wolfgang Hampel visited all the places where Betty MacDonald and her family lived.
He interviewed Betty MacDonald's and Mary Bard Jensen's family and friends.
The international Betty MacDonald Fan Club members tremendously enjoy Wolfgang Hampel's fascinating Betty MacDonald and Ma and Pa Kettle biography, his satirical poems and very witty interviews but also his brilliant friends.

Gwen Grant's Xmas story was charming and highly imaginative with real stars & the Milky Way decorating a huge cosmic tree. I especially love the conversation between George One & Mr. Estimet, their observations on us humans, the good and the bad. And, of course, I loved Gwen's reminding us that there are some humans who continue to live with hope and giving. This is a lovely Xmas story.
We are semi-frozen here. But it is lovely to look out of the window & see the scene of snow on the pond and trees.

Gwen Grant's Xmas story was charming and highly imaginative with real stars & the Milky Way decorating a huge cosmic tree. I especially love the conversation between George One & Mr. Estimet, their observations on us humans, the good and the bad. And, of course, I loved Gwen's reminding us that there are some humans who continue to live with hope and giving. This is a lovely Xmas story.
We are semi-frozen here. But it is lovely to look out of the window & see the scene of snow on the pond and trees.
